NINA ALSOP

NINA GERTRUDE ALSOP Peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2007 with family by her side, Nina passed away at Charleswood Care Centre at the age of 84 years. Nina will be lovingly remembered by her son Kim (Eileen) Davis, and daughter Barbara (Ernie) Gerard; stepsons, Ron (Gladys) Alsop, Dave (Bev) Alsop, Dick Alsop and Ted (Joan) Alsop, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Noel, in 1954; second husband Jim in 1994, and youngest child Mark in 2006. Nina was born on September 1, 1922 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and grew up in Saskatchewan and Manitoba before serving in the WRENS from January 1944 until October 1945, a time she recalled as one of the highlights of her life. She made many lifetime friends from her time in the Navy and had many cherished memories. Nina married her first husband Noel in Australia and returned to Canada with her three young children upon his death to start a new life in Winnipeg. She worked as a legal stenographer for many years, most of them for the City of Winnipeg, where she added to her expanding circle of long time friends before retiring in 1982. She met her second husband, Jim, while working for the City. Nina's great sense of humour, gentle manner and cheerful attitude toward life made her well liked by everyone who knew her. She was a vibrant, creative and caring woman who loved opera, ballroom dancing, painting, gardening, sewing, bowling and making something out of nothing. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home And Reception centre 885-9715
