MICHAEL CHARTRAND

MICHAEL CHARTRAND June 23, 1934 - February 18, 2012 It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we, the family of Mike Chartrand, announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great- grandfather. After a lengthy and very hard fought battle with cancer and diabetes, he was called to be with the Lord at the age of 77 years. Dad is survived by his two sons Chris (Sheila) Chartrand of Estevan, SK, and Evan (Pat) Chartrand of Carberry, MB; grandchildren Brent, Jaicee, Laura, Travis, Mitchell and Nicole.; great-grandchildren Mark and Kyle; sister Gertrude (Alvin) Stinson along with numerous nephews and nieces. Dad is predeceased by his oldest son Richard Chartrand; his parents Etienne and Caroline Chartrand; sisters Janita Monkman, Lucy McLeod, and Pat Burdett; brothers Albert Chartrand, Alex Chartrand and Jim Chartrand; brothers-in-law Charlie Burdett and Charlie Monkman. Dad was born in Lundar, MB on June 23, 1934 to Caroline and Etienne Chartrand. He grew up near the Minnewakin area with his family. It was during this time in his life that he realized his great love of nature which lasted his entire life. Dad could recognize any bird by its call. Many a Blue Jay have enjoyed a feast of nuts and seeds compliments of Dad. He always loved to go on what he called Safari's watching closely for all wildlife. After the passing of his mother, Dad went to live with friends on their family farm, a place where he developed fond memories and happy times. In later years he always referred lovingly to Mother (Maude) Taylor and Helmer Johnson. Helmer would become his best man at his wedding. Dad quit school at an early age (to the great objection of his teacher) to work in the hay fields in the summer and ice fish in the northern lakes in the winter. In the spring of 1956 Dad enlisted in the Armed Services. This would spawn a 20 year military career which included many postings and deployments through Canada and Europe. Dad married Irene Florence Evans on August 24, 1957 at Holland, MB. They were blessed with three wonderful sons Rick, Evan and Chris. When he retired from active duty he was hired at Carnation Foods in Carberry where he worked until retirement. During this time he met and married Rosie Reimer. After retirement he moved back to Lundar, MB by himself where he lived out his remaining years amongst family and friends. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Lundar Community Hall with Father Michel Nault officiating. Interment to follow in the Minnewakin Cemetery. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale, MB and the Lundar Assisted Care Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by: ARNASON FUNERAL HOME Ashern - Lundar 1-204-768-2072 1-866-323-3593

  • Uncle Mike has left us with many memories. Driving around the country side, listening to country music and checking out the wildlife..his "cattle" as he called them. His sense of humor was the cause of many chuckles. Our deepest condolences go out to his children and their families. Rest gently Uncle Mike.
