JOHN BRIAN WESTMORE, Ph.D. April 23, 1937 - April 10, 2012 On April 10, after a courageous battle against MS and cancer, John passed away at his home, according to his wishes. John is survived by his loving wife Pat, brothers Roger (Valerie) and Nick, sons David and Michael (Kristin), grandchildren Owen, Ben Claralleyne, Kayleigh, Lance and Graham, a niece and nephew and several cousins. Educated in England (Dartford Grammar School, University College London) and recently married, he immigrated to Canada in 1961. After spending two years on a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Research Council in Ottawa, he joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Manitoba where he stayed until he retired in 2001. During a successful research and teaching career he participated in several National and International scientific conferences, authoring or co-authoring over 100 scientific publications, mainly, but not exclusively, involving his research specialty-mass spectrometry. Sabbatical leaves were spent at Cambridge University (England), Texas A M, AECL, Australian National University (Canberra) and the University of New South Wales (Sydney). He and Pat especially enjoyed the visits to Australia, which were long enough to appreciate the delights of the country. In his youth he was an active participant in many sports, including soccer and cricket, but his first love was rugby football, playing at least once, but sometimes two or three times a week during the English winter. In 1976, he was diagnosed with MS, which, fortunately, did not become severe enough to harm his career, becoming troublesome only after retirement. The family would like to thank the home care staff who enabled him to remain in his home and the Palliative care nurses who helped to ease his passing. In keeping with his request, cremation has taken place and a family celebration of John's life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in John's memory can be made to the Manitoba branch of the MS Society, Cancer, or your favourite charity.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I took introductory physical chemistry from Prof. Westmore in 1963-64. He was one of a tiny group of profs who could actually teach well and he was certainly an inspiration to me. I went on to a career in analytical and industrial process chemistry. Like a bolt from the blue, he came to mind last summer for some reason and I phoned him. It was good to hear his voice again, still with the accent of his birthplace. I was saddened to hear of his battle with Multiple Sclerosis which has affected a family member of mine, and now, of his passing. He will remain in my memory as the prof who inspired me to follow the path I did. I extend my deepest sympathy to Pat and the rest of his family. - Posted by: Gord Richardson (Former student) on: Apr 14, 2012
