JUNE MADELINE LOFTUS (nee EDGAR) June 20, 1915 - June 11, 2012 It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of June Loftus at her home at Sterling House, on Monday, June 11, 2012 just shy of her 97th birthday. June was born in Saskatoon, SK to Isabella (Belle) (Gibson) and James (Jay) Ernest Edgar. In 1921 the family of six moved to Port Burwell, ON. In 1924 after the death of their mother, June was sent to live with her Aunt Ella and Uncle Stan Wilson in Winnipeg where she finished her schooling at Norwood Collegiate and Success Business College. After college she worked at the Eaton's Mail Order until she married William Thomas Loftus in 1941. June and Bill spent the next several years between Winnipeg and Fort William, ON (Thunder Bay) while Bill built his career, first as a flight instructor during the Second World War, then as a pilot with Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada). In 1950, with son William Edgar Loftus, they returned to Winnipeg and eventually settled along the La Salle River, where Bill built their new home. In 1984 they moved back into Winnipeg and later made Sterling House their retirement home. June was a member of the United Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the UCW. She spent many hours volunteering and was involved with Home and School, Cubs, and Scouts. In 1955, and for the next 30 years, June volunteered at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital pool (now Riverview) working with the post-polio patients. For the last few years of her life, June enjoyed living at Sterling House, participating in Bingo, Bridge, Wii Bowling, Tea and Chat, and spending time with her friends and family. June was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2008; son Billy in 2009; parents, Belle and Jay Edgar; sisters, Isabel Bell Owen and Marian Smith Frazer both of British Columbia; and brother, Henry Edgar of Ontario. Left to cherish June's memory is her grandson Willie, his wife Paulette, and Willie's mother Joan Lutz, all of Nova Scotia; Mary Solvason of Winnipeg; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends throughout Canada. June will be warmly remembered by her Winnipeg relatives, Kally Kneeshaw and family, for her gentle spirit and loving presence. A private graveside service will take place at St. Vital Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a reception in celebration of June's life at Sterling House, 909 Wilkes Avenue on Thursday, July 5, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations in memory of June can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.
