JOAN RICHMOND TORPEY (MATKIN) November 11, 1921 - June 21, 2012 Joan peacefully went to join Dad, surrounded by her family's love. Left to remember her are children George, Robert (Lynne), Chris (Gillian), Barbara (Robert), Ron (Rita), Susan (Dennis), grandchildren Kevin (Teri), Kerrie (Dave), Heather, Robin, Katy, great-grandchildren Jesse and Austin, and her sister, Marjorie. Joan was predeceased by her husband, George, her sister, Barbara and daughters-in-law Lylla and Annette. Joan was born November 11, 1921, in Regina, Saskatchewan, a "true-blue prairie" girl who loved looking at the clouds, stars, flowers, and nature. She worked at B.A. Oil after business school and met her love, George, there. They were married in March 1944, and started their family. Joan and George moved to Winnipeg where they made their home on Lindsay Street for over 35 years. Summer vacations were spent at Gull Lake or Grand Beach, and every second year a family visit out west. There were weekend 'work parties' and back yard BBQ's, and Joan and George loved having everyone over. We all lent a hand and Mom so enjoyed having the whole family around her, including "adopted kids" nephew Scott, wife Maggie, their children Michael and Erin, and Mom's good friend and neighbour Annette. Later, Mom and Dad travelled and some of Mom's favourite memories were of Caribbean cruises and trips to Hawaii. Many years, on her birthday, the whole family would gather for a Chinese dinner, Mom's favourite. Mom was a devout member and supporter of St. Aidan's Anglican Church for over 55 years. Mom was involved with the Woman's Guild, and with Dad were founding members of the New Horizon's Group for lawn bowling, bridge and cribbage. After Dad passed away, Mom took over the church's weekly collection counting and deposit for many years. Mom's final years were spent at Riverview Health Centre. The staff made her welcome, she was very content and happy, and her children visited regularly. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at St. Aidan's Church, 274 Campbell Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joan can be made to Winnipeg Harvest, 1085 Winnipeg St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0S2.
