JOHN CHAPMAN

JOHN CHARLES CHAPMAN John died peacefully on July 12, 2012. John will be loved forever and missed greatly by the love of his life, Kathy. He is also survived by his stepchildren Daniel and Corey Olson, and son Jeffrey Chapman as well as his ten siblings: Bev (Peter) Moss, Linda (Brian) Shopka, Judy Hossack, Rob (Barb) Chapman, Wendy Thomson, Susan Ollinger (Richard), Debbie (Mitch) Eden, Michael Chapman, Kerry Hill (Dean Fontaine), Tracey (Mike) McGill; his in-laws, Mabel Stewart, Andrew (Allyson) Stewart, Matthew Stewart, Susan (Robert) Voesenek, as well as his many nieces and nephews. John was born in Winnipeg, January 22, 1953. He grew up in St. James attending St. James Collegiate and received his Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Manitoba in 1975. John attained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1977 joining the firm of KPMG. John went on to become a partner with KPMG in Portage la Prairie. When KPMG closed its smaller offices John and his partner Henry Riendeau opened their own practice CHAPMAN RIENDEAU. Mark Verwey joined the partnership in 1995 when Henry retired and they became CHAPMAN VERWEY. Then in 2002 they merged with Galloway Lapchuk Nicoll to become BDO CANADA LLP. A Celebration of John's Life will take place on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the William Glesby Centre (11 2nd Street NE in Portage la Prairie, MB). Viewing will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel (56 Royal Rd. South) on Monday, July 23, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial donations in memory of John may be made to Central Plains CancerCare in support of the 2013 Central Plains Challenge Walk, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8, or the Community Foundation of Portage and District Inc., P.O. Box 1153, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3J9, or to a charity of one's choice.   • I used to work for/with John at BDO in Portage, I left there a few years back and moved within Manitoba. I have been out of touch for a while and had not been aware until now of his passing, while reading a past CA Folio publication. I learned a lot from John, he encouraged me in my pursuit of the CA designation and challenged me to think critically in exercising professional judgement. He was a very good accountant, I and was sorry to hear of his passing. I will remember him well. God Bless.

  • I remember John as a lot of fun when we were students at Thorne Riddell. We had a lot of good laughs playing baseball/hockey and drinking many beers. He had a way of making things fun and could switch gears when needed to get things done.

  • I met John when I was a first year CA student at Thorne Riddell (KPMG now)in the late 1970's. I work under John on several files and remember well his patience, understanding and helpful guidance which was both needed and appreciated. He was also kind enough to teach me that the junior guy always paid for the beer. When I moved to Vancouver many years ago I lost touch with John. I was saddened to read of his passing in the Winnipeg paper while I was on vacation here. I will remember John's sense of humour and his genuine affection for people. He was a good man.   • John and I worked very closely together in the 1990s. I was Executive Director of CFS (Central Manitoba) at the time and John was our auditor. I remember John as a caring and honest man who would often go above and beyond the call or the terms of the contract to ensure that our agency could continue to do its work with children and families. Personally, I was always comfortable in John's presence and we shared many a joke together. I was not aware that he had been sick and I regret that we lost contact after I moved to Winnipeg. My condolences to the family and his colleagues. He will be missed and always remembered.
