SOPHIE KLOWAK ( nee SWARYCHEWSKI ) May 5, 1928 - October 29, 2013 Sophie Klowak passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg. She was 85 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband Peter Klowak; her parents William and Annie Swarychewski; her sister Mary Skrabyk; and two brothers Mike and Steve Swarychewski. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Terry and David (Bernadette) and daughters Donna Boyce and Janet (Brian Saint Cyr). She had four grandchildren; Melissa, Ashley-Anne and Adam Klowak and Sheri Boyce; one great- grandchild Kendra Lee; two sisters Helen Surminski and Rose Merritt. Mother was born on May 5, 1928 near Poplarfield Manitoba. Her parents raised their six children on the family homestead. Mother attended New Star School. For better opportunities, she moved to Winnipeg in her late teens and worked at various jobs. On May 30, 1953 she married her beloved husband Peter Klowak in the St. Nicholas Church in Poplarfield. In 1958, with a growing family, they bought a new house in East Kildonan. Here they raised their four children. Marriages occurred and four grandchildren were born. Father passed away on April 17, 1998. They had been married for 44 years. A few years after Father's passing, Mother was blessed with a great grandchild. She continued to live in her East Kildonan home up to her final three weeks. She had lived there for 55 years. Mother had mastered many skills and talents. She could sew her young children's clothes. She could knit sweaters. She was a master chef in baking and cooking, especially Ukrainian dishes. She could do the finest needlework. She planted a backyard garden every year and her house was decorated with colourful flowers. Mother enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Vancouver, Toronto and the casino bus trips into the USA. She loved to play cards with friends. She had many friends. She loved when family and friends would visit her at home. As her mobility declined, she spent more time at home. She was passionate about knitting for an organization called Share Christmas. She was but one, from a group of avid knitters who volunteered their time to knit hats, scarves and mitts for schools in low income neighbourhoods. Over the years Mother had knitted 3000 items so that children could be warm during the cold winters. She will always be remembered for her unconditional love towards her family. A private memorial service to celebrate her life was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, Manitoba. The Celebrant was Vince Anderson. Interment followed at the Garden of Prayer in the Glen Eden Cemetery. With a brisk cool wind blowing and the sights and sounds of Canada geese flying over, she was laid to rest next to her husband. Pallbearers were her three nephews Dave Ostryzniuk, Bill Skrabyk and Larry Skrabyk; grandson Adam Klowak and sons David and Terry Klowak. A reception followed.
