STEPHANIE (STEPHIE) FRANCES HORASKI February 12, 1927 - February 4, 2017 Peacefully, after a brief illness, it is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Stephie Frances Horaski, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Seven Oaks General Hospital just eight days prior to what would have been her 90th birthday. Stephie will be lovingly remembered by her children Janet Armistead (Al), Jerry, Terry (Joanne), Diane (Walter) Cwik, Johnnie and Sandy; grandchildren Kenny (Alison) and Sean Armistead, Jason, Jordan and Breanna Horaski, Samantha and Alyssa Cwik; great- grandchildren Vanessa, Garrett and Tyler Armistead, brother Bill (Helen) Stoyko, sister-in-law Mary Stoyko and many extended family members. She was predeceased by her husband John of 61 years, parents Ignac and Frances Stoyko, brother Fred Stoyko and son-in-law Ken Armistead. In 1927 Stephie was born in Szenew Tarnopol, Poland. In 1936 the family moved to Canada and settled in the Eastdale area located near Beausejour, MB. Though Stephie enjoyed farm life, her indomitable spirit brought her to Winnipeg at age 14, residing with her cousin Jean Michalyshin, also age 14. Together these comrades in arms enjoyed many adventures during the wartime years. Stephie loved music and song. Her time spent singing and traveling with the church choir brought her much joy. Stephie married John in 1948. She ended her career in the clothing industry to pursue her greatest joy - that of raising her family. Mom took great pride encouraging the individuality and growth of her children and amidst the many differences of each, her wisdom, guidance and never ending love created a sense of belonging and "home" for everyone. In 1970 Stephie was diagnosed with cancer. As a wife and mother of six children, and with the odds of survival very much against her, Stephie chose to fight cancer and won. Looking back, nothing stopped her from raising her family. Though Mom had many medical hardships throughout her life, she never complained nor would she accept pity. She faced every issue with grace, a positive attitude and a will to overcome. At Stephie's request no formal funeral will be held and burial will take place at a private ceremony in Eastdale Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mary Lopez (RN), who for many years assisted Mom with her medical needs. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a charity of one's choice.
