KATHERINE (KATHY) MARGUERITE BALES (nee BLUE) On Saturday, February 18, 2017, Kathy passed away at the Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 65 years, after a period of declining health. Remaining to cherish Kathy's memory are her sisters, Laura (Dan) and Joanne (Ralph); former husband, Karl Pohl; nephews, John (Lily), Joseph (Sara) and Michael; her children, Kathleen, Krista (Kristjan) and Richard as well as her grandchild, Desmond. She was predeceased by her parents, Gladys Olecka and John Blue; stepfather Henry Olecka; her former husband Henry Funk and her husband Chris Bales. Kathy was born and raised in Winnipeg. Here, she brought three children into the world; Kathleen (with Henry Funk), Krista and Richard (with Karl Pohl). She later moved to Gladstone to be with her greatest love, Chris Bales. After becoming a widow, the arrival of her grandson Desmond brought much joy to her later years. Kathy will be remembered for her honesty, her selflessness and her kind heart. She had a unique gift to see the best in others and had the ability to make anyone feel welcome in her presence. We were fortunate to learn many valuable lessons from Kathy during her 65 years, among them; how to stretch a dollar, to always send a thank-you card and to never arrive empty-handed at a gathering. In compliance with Kathy's wishes, a private family celebration of life will be held. The family would like to thank the staff at Douglas Campbell Lodge and Health Sciences Centre GA3 for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kathy's memory to the Douglas Campbell Lodge Foundation, 150 9th Street SE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3T6. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • When you thought of Kathy, you thought of her big heart. When she was young we would create rafts to sail down a rain swollen ditch in Stonewall ( well more like paddleboarding), and climb trees and pretend we were searching ocean islands for castaways . She was so good at making something out of nothing. She once made herself a dress all "hand" sewn..( every dart, pleat and sleeve)...and it looked like it was sewn by Edith Head the award winning costume set designer. She was a wonderful and gifted person. My condolences go out to Richard, Krista Laura and Joanne and all her recent family (adopted via the heart) that I never had the privilege of meeting. - Posted by: Norma Baerbig (Cousin) on: Mar 01, 2017

  • A word of condolence to Kathy's family and friends, and particularly to Laura: it is hard to anticipate the absence created when someone leaves, but even more difficult when saying goodbye to a sibling who you grew up with. Hopefully the three sisters being together during Kathy's last moments will bring some comfort to you during this difficult time, and to those dear to her who were also able to be there. Warmest thoughts and wishes are with you all during this challenging time, Diane - Posted by: Diane Rachiele (Sister-in-law of Laura Blue Rachiele (formerly Denchuk)) on: Feb 25, 2017
