JOHN BAKER August 13, 1938 - March 10, 2017 With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of John Richard Baker, much loved husband, dad and grandpa, at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach on Friday, March 10, 2017. John is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 51 years, daughters Tanis Gillis (Daniel), Janelle Braun (Adam), and five grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew, Juliana, Brooklynn and Isabella. He was predeceased by his dad Cyril Baker, his mother Jessie, his half-sister Jean Thomas, and his older brother Jim. John was born in Teulon, MB on August 13, 1938. He grew up in Killarney where his dad ran Baker Agencies. He worked with Manitoba Hydro for 38 years and spent most of his career in Steinbach until his retirement in 1994. John and Sylvia enjoyed many trips in their motor home, travelling from coast to coast with their family. After his retirement, they spent winters in Palm Springs. John also loved gardening, boating, joking with the grandkids and spoiling their cocker spaniel Darby. He was a meticulous builder and repairman, with the ability to fix anything. To John, everything was always 110 percent, no matter what kind of day he was having. With his unique laugh, welcoming smile and positive outlook on life, he touched so many others and left them happier for having known him. The family would like to thank Dr. Curtis Krahn and the staff at CancerCare at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethesda CancerCare. A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach. A private interment will follow. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I will never forget Mr. Baker. From the perfectly manicured lawn to immaculate house he truly was a inspiration. He was a father figure to a little boy next door in need. Thanks for being there. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Marco Gallo (family friend) on: Mar 17, 2017

  • I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Baker. I have so many fond memories of him and the whole Baker family, as they were a part of the "Autumnwood gang". I look back on my childhood on that street and can remember Mr. Baker working in the yard, building and fixing things, and walking the dog all with a big smile on his face and a warm greeting for all the neighbourhood friends passing by. I hope you'll be able to find comfort in the happy memories of your husband, dad, and grandpa. - Posted by: Giancarla Rempel (Gallo) (Family friend) on: Mar 16, 2017

  • I will always remember the wonderful times that I spent at the Baker household. Mr. Baker's smile and laughter would light up a room. He was a kind, loving, and easy spirit. While it has been many years... the memories of Mr. Baker and his amazing family are close to my heart. - Posted by: Giordana Cote (Gallo) (Family friend) on: Mar 15, 2017

  • I was a co worker of John's over a number of years. He always was a gentleman, a "go to guy" when it came to maintenance issues, and was always in a good mood. I thought John was a great ambassador for Manitoba Hydro and its maintenance department. Rest in peace John. - Posted by: Robert Crawley (Co Worker) on: Mar 15, 2017
