JAMES P. OLCEN July 15, 1935 - May 4, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Peter Olcen. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Leonie; siblings: Connie, Beverly, and Barbara; six children: Maureen, Joan (Dan), Val (Wes), Glenn (Mel), Joyce (Kevin), and Sheila (Keith); 13 grandchildren: Philip, Chad, Nicholas, Trevor, Candice, Shauna, Michelle, Jordan, Cody, Cailey, Rylan, Makenzie, and Hudson; and 3 great-grandchildren Emma, Daniel and Charlotte. He was predeceased by his parents (Alfred and Albina), siblings (Gladys, Cliff, Joan) and Baby Olcen. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Jim had a passion for bowling, golfing, racing standard-bred horses, fishing and spending time at the cabin. He enjoyed card games and teaching his grandkids how to play cribbage and poker. Being very competitive, everyone had to learn fast; Grandpa wasn't going to let you win without a fight. Food was a very important part of Jim's life. He started his career at Lallemand Foods. In 1965, Jim and Leonie started Olcen Foods, selling bakery supplies to the local area. By 1986, they started Mom's Pantry Products, a fundraising company that distributes food across Canada. He was very proud of these accomplishments but he was most proud of his family. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital Emergency and Dialysis Units for their kindness and patience in treating our dad and the Victoria Hospital Emergency and ICU. A Celebration of Jim's Life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Green Acres Funeral Home with Father David Brabant officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Canadian Blood Services, the Kidney Foundation of Canada - Manitoba Branch, https://www.kidney.ca/manitoba, or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May the love of friends and family and the wonderful memories that you shared bring you comfort in the coming days and weeks ahead. Faith, Hope and Love, but the greatest of these is Love. I enjoyed meeting Jim at family gatherings held at my sister (Bev) & brother-in-law Rolly's home. He had a great sense of humour. Rest in Peace dear Jim... Heaven has another angel. - Posted by: Deb Woodman (Family friend) on: May 09, 2017

  • Our deepest sympathy to Lee and her family. We have known the family since the children were quite small and Jim was into horses. He was a good friend and a great family man. He will be missed by all who knew him. - Posted by: Bill and Bertha Solar (Friends) on: May 09, 2017

  • So sorry to hear of the passing of one of my favorite uncles, my childhood memories with my Uncle Jim and his family are my best memories, out at the lake, playing with all my cousins. All my love to my Auntie Lee, Val, Glenn, Maureen and family at this hard time, oxoxo - Posted by: Sandy Olcen (Uncle) on: May 08, 2017

  • We are saddened to hear about Jim's passing. We always enjoyed his wry smile and his great sense of humour with all his friends and customers. His enthusiasm for the business was contagious and he was always eager to spread the news about a new product. It was a dream come true to have a family business which kept everyone he loved close to him and productive, a real model of co-operation and success. He will be greatly missed but we know that all the fond memories will help to console the family now and in the future. - Posted by: Ed and Barb Labossiere (friend) on: May 08, 2017

  • My deepest sympathy to Leonie and the Olcen family on Jim's passing. He struggled with health issues the last few years but never gave up. He is at peace now and free of all pain and suffering. Slow down now mom and take care of yourself. - Posted by: Linda Hird (friend) on: May 07, 2017
