EMMA RUTH YAKEL (KULL) 1924 - 2017 Emma Yakel, a long time Elmwood resident, passed away peacefully June 7, 2017, at the age of 92. Emma was born December 3, 1924 to Volhynian German Russian parents, Philip Kull and Elisabeth Simon. Mom married William Yakel in 1944 and spent 59 years together. They loved spending time at their cabin at Barrier Bay in the Whiteshell, and winter trips to warmer destinations. Mom enjoyed volunteering with Community Chest, the Red Cross, and for 15 years, at the Lutheran Goodwill Store which contributed to the building of Carriage House North for seniors. Emma started dressmaking in her home after working at Singers. She sewed dresses for many bridal parties with professionalism, taking great pride in her work. Mom was a life member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and was in Ladies Aid and served on many committees. She spent many happy hours making lap quilts for shut-ins. Emma is survived by three sons: William (Wanda), David (Janice) and Mark (Brenda); five grandchildren: Trevor (Keri), Tyson, Jeffrey (Alison), Breanne (T.J.) Edinger and Amanda (Tyler) Bousquet; four great-grandchildren: Deanna, Hayden, Desmond and Abel; sister Ellen Bancroft, and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by husband William Yakel; daughter-in-law Diana Yakel, and sister Edith Murphy. Funeral service will take place Tuesday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 708 McCalman Avenue. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Our special times spent with Auntie Emma will always be memorable. She was a real inspiration over many years with her positive attitude, youthful nature and sense of humour. She was a very talented seamstress, and sewed bridesmaid dresses for our wedding, as well as for other occasions. No challenge in life seemed to be beyond her capabilities. She will be dearly missed by all the family, if only for her presence in latter years. She certainly was a blessing, and we will continue to reminisce about her. There's no doubt that she has gone on to better things! Jack and Linda Bernhardt - Posted by: Jack and Linda Bernhardt (Aunt) on: Jun 14, 2017

  • Emma has always been one of my favourite friends at church. Both Doug and I have happy memories of time spent with her and your dad in Hawaii. And, I have many special memories of working with her at ladies aid and always being welcomed with a hug when we would meet. The last time we got together was when I was in Concordia hospital and Ellen brought her to my room for a visit. We reminisced and laughed for a couple of hours and I am especially happy that those laughs we enjoyed are how I will always remember her. Sincere condolences to all your family. Your mom was a special lady. - Posted by: Elinore loos (Church sister) on: Jun 12, 2017
