RUDOLPH JOHN (JACK) KARRAS Peacefully, on Sunday, July 23, 2017, Jack passed away with family by his side. Left to cherish his memory are son John (Elaine) and their children Lia and Victoria Karras and Erik (Natalie) and Dominique St. Hilaire, daughter Patricia (Don), and their children Sara, Lisa and Whitney Spangelo. He will also be deeply missed by sister Joann Barrick, and sister-in-law Beryl Henders, as well as nieces, nephews, and many cousins and life-long friends. Jack was predeceased by his wife Lorraine (nee Henders), his parents, Rudolph and Melita Karras, brothers-in-law Lloyd Henders and Garth Barrick, and sister-in-law Leona Henders. Jack was born in Yellowgrass, SK in 1931 and during his childhood lived in many small towns across the Prairie Provinces. He completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba before embarking on a long engineering career with Manitoba Hydro. Jack married his dear wife of 60 years, Lorraine in 1956. Jack and Lorraine had been life-long residents of St. Vital and summer residents of Victoria Beach. Jack was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his grandgirls and was very supportive of all their pursuits. He was a gifted cabinet-maker and has left a legacy of special items and furniture pieces for each of the girls. Jack found peace in the outdoors. He loved to camp and combined that passion with his interest in the history of North America through many trips with Lorraine to explore the places that he had read about. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dakota House, Riverwood Square and Golden Links Lodge for their care and compassion over the last several years. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory can be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 31 at the United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota St. at 2:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Sending our deepest sympathy to Pat, Don and girls, John, Elaine and girls. Although we could not attend his celebration of life, we said some prayers for him. Jack was an awesome, intelligent man and we loved his visits to Regina and our visits to Winnipeg. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Janet and Doug Craig (Cousins) on: Aug 04, 2017

  • My deepest sympathy to Jack's family. I have known Jack since he and Lorraine began dating while students at the University of Manitoba. Jack was notable for his authenticity, his high standards of ethics and behavior, his genuine hospitality and gentle demeanor, his dependability and his great love for his wife, Lorraine. As noted in the obituary, he had a deep love for all his family, especially the "grandgirls" and took great pride in them. A trip to Winnipeg was never complete without a visit with Jack and Lorraine. It was especially meaningful to me that they also opened their home to me as their guest on many of my solo visits to the city. I shall always miss my dear and wonderful friends, Jack and Lorraine Karras. My husband, George, joins me in sending our condolences to the family.
