GERHARD KUNST October 5, 1923 - August 2, 2017 Passed away peacefully, at Vista Park Lodge, at the age of 93 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Luise in 2015, and leaves to mourn his passing son Dirk; daughter-in-law Betty; and grandsons Karsten, David and Branden. Gerhard was born and raised in Zeitz, Germany. He developed a love of reading, and languages, able to speak three fluently. He loved to hop his bike and ride with his friends racing the trains. At just shy of 18 years he enlisted in the military. As a young soldier performing foot patrol he crossed paths with Luise while she worked as a childhood educator, caring for her young charges. There were frequent "accidental" meetings until Gerhard left to serve in the war. They were reunited after the war and were married in October 1946, in Hanover. They chose to immigrate to Canada in 1953 and settled in Winnipeg. He found employment with the then Dominion Motors, starting as a gas jockey and was soon promoted to Control Manager, where he worked for over 30 years. They were able to save enough money to build a cottage in Belair where many happy summers were spent. He loved to tramp through the bush, picking blueberries, mushrooms and strawberries. Upon retirement they discovered the joys of life as snowbirds with winters spent in St. Petersburg, Florida. During this time they chose to sell the cottage and make Shorepointe Village in Gimli their summer home. He insisted on making the drive to Florida and back every year for 20 years, never deterring from his set route, as there were certain hotels and restaurants that needed to be visited. On their way back, the last stop before home was a bakery in Fargo so that Papa could bring his grandsons fresh apple turnovers and sour cream donuts. Age and inability to live independently saw them returning to Winnipeg. As per Gerhard's wishes, cremation and a private family gathering has taken place. Thanks to the staff of Vista Park Lodge where he had resided for the last two years, indulging his quirks and bringing him his warm milk and sugar at bedtime. Our heartfelt thanks to family and friends for their thoughtful words and caring. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com
