DIENA YOUNG (DE JONG) (née WICHERDINA MULDER) May 31, 1915 - August 3, 2017 When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree: Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet; And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget. I shall not see the shadows, I shall not feel the rain; I shall not hear the nightingale Sing on, as if in pain: And dreaming through the twilight That doth not rise nor set, Haply I may remember, And haply may forget. (by Christina Rossetti) Our beautiful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at the Southeast Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, in her 103rd year of life. Her greatest joy in life was her family, of whom she was inordinately proud. She loved us dearly and we loved her dearly in return. She said in her last years that she'd lived a good life and that we should not cry for her after she was gone. In this, as always, she expected more of us than is humanly possible. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Arlene Young, Dean de Jong, and John Young, and their spouses Bob, Sandi, and Mag, by her grandchildren, Laurel, Jenny, Jamie, Jondavid, Matthew, and Ben and their spouses Rob, Aaron, Sue, Kate, and Noel, by her great-grandchildren, Charlie, Alexandra, Emma, Alex, and Jane, and by her niece, Sheila Wiens. She was predeceased by her husband, Nick, her twin sister, Margaret Wiens, and by her little grandson, Stephen. The sad thing about living so long is that your peers and many in your family are no longer here to mourn your loss, but our mother nevertheless had many friends in the wonderful and caring staff at Southeast and in her devoted friend and neighbour in the room across the hall, Renée Richard. We thank all the staff at Southeast for the wonderful and compassionate care they provided, with special thanks to some of them who knew her best and cared for her for most or all of the years she was there - Jimmy, Diane, Claudette, Kola, Josh, John, and Ana. Special thanks as well to Rita and Kevin and other members of the administrative staff for their compassion, and to Erin, who helped us through a particularly difficult moment near the end. There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may wish to donate to Sistema Winnipeg (https://wso.ca/sistema/).
