IRENE BROWN April 24, 1926 - August 4, 2017 Irene Brown passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, surrounded by family, on August 4, 2017, at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband William Brown, daughter Valerie Benson, sister Peggy Sinclair, and brother John Currie. Left to cherish her memory are her son David (Hazel), daughter Sheila Carriere, son-in-law Keith Benson, sister Billie Milne, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. Irene was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, where she met and married William Brown. As a war bride, she travelled to Winnipeg where she and Bill lived, worked, and raised their family. Irene had a no-nonsense approach to life, and even in her later years was fiercely independent and maintained a sharp wit. She loved to joke with friends, family, and all those who came in contact with her. Thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital and special thanks to the staff at Cathedrale Manor, Irene's home for the last six years. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a family graveside service has been held. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My fondest memory of Mrs. Brown is the phone call I received from her the night before I was to emigrate to Australia. She had sent me $10 through her daughter Valerie and that is exactly the amount I arrived in Australia with. She told me to find work quickly so that I would not be so lonely for family when I arrived. She told me of her experience of arriving as a war bride to Canada and was keen to give me support regarding what it would be like to leave my home in Canada. I have often remembered this phone call and the gratitude I felt for her to have done this for me. I was in Glasgow a few weeks ago and thought fondly of her. All the best to David, Sheila, Keith and daughters, especially Lauren. Sharon - Posted by: Sharon Sargent (Hickey) (neighbour and good friend of Valerie (daughter)) on: Aug 18, 2017

  • I was saddened to hear of Mrs. Brown's passing. My condolences go to her family at this sad time. I grew up in Winnipeg on Manhattan Avenue. The Brown family was down the street. I was fortunate to have Mr. & Mrs Brown as my God parents. Through the years and many visits , I have fond memories. One I think of often, is the trip to Scotland and England in 1973. They introduced me to the Scottish and English culture. I have frequently visit both countries since and I still remember my first visit with the Brown's. I appreciate the love and the advise given to me during my childhood. You will be missed more than you know. I hope you and Mr. Brown are together again. - Posted by: Margaret Petersen , nee Douglas (Family friend, God daughter) on: Aug 17, 2017

  • On behalf of my family I would like to offer our deepest sympathies to your family. We have wonderful memories of your mom. She was very kind to my grandmother Rose. We still think of your mom when we make her sparerib sauce. I believe we even submitted it into the kids school cookbooks as "Mrs. Brown's Spareribs". She was such a wonderful person to know. She will be missed. - Posted by: Wendy Flynn (Douglas) (Friend) on: Aug 15, 2017
