WALTER HNYLYCIA Peacefully on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, our beloved father and grandfather Walter Hnylycia passed away at the age of 87. Walter is survived by his daughter Sheryl and son-in-law Dale McMullen; son Daryl; daughter Colleen and son-in-law Jay Pylypuik; grandchildren, Owen, Danny, Sara, and Megan; sister-in-law Gwen and brother-in-law David Smriga; nephew Matthew and Sarah Smriga; great-nephew Luke; and numerous cousins. Walter was predeceased by his wife Ruth, his parents, Sophie and Dmytro Hnylycia, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Walter was born in Hubbard, Saskatchewan on April 18, 1930, attended Stanisloff School until Grade 9 and then farmed with his parents until he was 27. In 1957, began his 33-year career with CNCP Telecommunications, first as a cook in Saskatoon for a work crew of 60, then quickly worked his way to a lineman technician and was responsible for all train dispatchers from Melville to Churchill and Regina to Armstrong, Ontario prior to his retirement in 1990. His work had him travelling all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario for several years until 1966 when he settled in Winnipeg. With retirement, Wally kept busy as chief cook at home, tending to his vegetable garden, duties as the family's handyman, keeping in touch with former work buddies and cheering on the SK Roughriders. Walter married Ruth on September 16, 1967 and celebrated 45 years of marriage together until the time of her passing in 2012. Wally was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and family member that was a hard worker and made the most out of every situation. A strong, quiet type, Wally demonstrated that actions speak louder than words as he provided and cared for his family - consistently putting the needs of others first. Wally spent many lunch hours at work playing cribbage with his work buddies and practiced his card skills with Ruth and the kids at home. Cherished annual vacations involved trips to Ituna to visit his parents, camping in the trailer at Grand Beach and Blue Lake, Ontario, and a two-week trip to Florida in 1985. Wally was also a devoted parishioner at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church for many years. Funeral service will be held on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, with interment service to follow. Wally's family would like to thank the staff at The Waverley, Victoria General Hospital, Home Instead and most recently the Poseidon Care Centre for the care and support provided to our Dad over the years. Your care and compassion has been a blessing to Wally and our family. In lieu of flowers, if family or friends desire, a donation in Wally's memory can be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
