NICHOLAS KOWALEC December 1, 1917 - August 22, 2017 It is with much love and sorrow we announce the passing of Nicholas Kowalec on August 22, 2017, at the age of 99 years. Nicholas was predeceased by his wife Effie; parents William and Anna; and sisters Nellie and Kay. He will be sadly missed by his sons Ernie (Jan) and Alan (Christina); grandchildren Miranda (Johann) and Max (Kaarina); and his four great-grandchildren Ethan, Hyla, Noah and Benjamin; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Nick was born December 1, 1917 in Toronto but moved to Cooks Creek, Manitoba at an early age. As a young man, he was hired as a carpenter by Father Ru to work on the construction of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Cooks Creek. Today, it is still one of rural Manitoba's striking landmarks and a provincial heritage site. He continued to work in the construction industry until his retirement in 1982. Nick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was extremely knowledgeable and talented in building and repairing almost anything and he enjoyed sharing his skills with his family and friends. For the 61 years that he lived on Warsaw Avenue he will be remembered as an endearing neighbour ready to lend a helpful hand to anyone needing a little assistance with a home or garden project. He loved to tinker, talk and just be a friend. Many examples of his carpentry creations will continue to be treasured for years to come. Above all, he enjoyed his garden and home which he looked after, on his own, well into his 90s. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Misericordia Place (MP2) for their special care and understanding extended to Nick in the last two years. Respecting Nick's wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
