RICHARD MONKMAN Gabeneeganaydung Peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2002, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Richard Monkman passed away at the age of 36 years. Richard was born in Eriksdale, MB, on May 18, 1966. He leaves his brothers and sisters to cherish his beautiful memory; Dennis (Marlene), Sharon (Everett), Joanne Mousseau (Steven), Denise, Bill (Liz), Leslie (Loretta), Lorraine (Larry), and Rosemary (Peter), plus numerous nephews and nieces. Richard was predeceased by his beloved parents, Clarence (Angus) and Jean Monkman; two brothers, Peter and Ken, and brother-in-law Albert Bone and niece Mika. At age 16 when he was in R.B. Russell Vocational School, Richard became ill with arthritis. He slowed down very rapidly and became dependent on his family and his lifelong friends, Jackie and her husband. Throughout the years Richard understood and accepted his illness. He never gave up. He went to therapy, exercised, and made many trips to different elders for medicine. Richard strongly believed in the traditional ways. He became spiritually healthy and stronger as he received a lot of help and guidance by attending the Sweatlodge ceremonies, dancing at the Sundance and using sacred herbs and medicines. In his later years he enjoyed sitting around with family and friends sharing his knowledge of traditional teachings. He was an excellent host when he had visitors, telling jokes and enjoying a good laugh, with coffee or tea, ready along with a bite to eat. He enjoyed going on outings with family and friends. Over the years he showed courage, patience, and tolerance. We recognized his values and the preciousness of life regardless of his condition. It appeared to us that Richard learned to ignore pain and suffering and live life as decent as possible. Richard took pride in his ability to comfort people. We are also proud to have had him as a brother, friend, and teacher. Prayers will be said at Dennis Monkmans residence on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. with wake to follow. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 11 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Dog Creek, with Father Mario officiating. Interment to follow at Lake Manitoba Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Crystal, Jodene, Petra, Delanie, Allissa, Lindsay and Nelson Mousseau. Active pallbearers will be Everett Longclaws, Peter Dixon, Jack Maytwayashing, Eric Maytwayashing, Kelly Maytwayashing and John Choken. The family gives sincere thanks to doctors, nurses and staff at the Health Sciences Centre, all the caregivers and elders, Lake Manitoba First Nation community and Arnason Funeral Chapel of Ashern, MB.
