JAMES ALEXANDER FERRIS 1923 - 2005 On November 16, 2005 James left us to join his loving wife Catherine, cherished son Jim, his parents, Samuel and Mary Ellen and sister Elizabeth Ferris. He will be missed by his loving family, daughter Heather (Bob) Mackie, grandchildren, Colleen (Tim) Mahoney, Robyn, Jillian and great-grandson Quinton Mackie; daughter-in-law Heather, grandsons, Jamie and Robert Ferris and foster son Ralph Greenwood; sister Eveline (Gordon), nieces, Linda, Debbie and nephew Daryl Wakeham of Coquitlam, BC. James was born in Newry County Down, Northern Ireland. He lost his parents at an early age and was raised in Dr. Bernardo's Naval School for Boys in the United Kingdom. He immigrated to Canada in 1938 and worked on a farm in Southern Ontario. James enlisted in the army as a gunner in Newfoundland at 17 years of age. While stationed in Winnipeg, he met the love of his life, Catherine. James and Catherine married on June 5, 1943 and together they raised two children and a foster son. James worked on the C.P. Railroad for 35 years and retired in 1983. James and Catherine made many trips to Ireland, the Orkney Islands and to the Eastern Coast. James made friends easily and he had wonderful friends who never forgot him. They always came to visit and cheer him up. He was affectionately known as the Candy Man , as he always had candy in his pockets to hand out. Thanks and appreciation to all the home care girls at the Courts of St. James and to the staff on tower 7 at Deer Lodge Centre for their excellent and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in James' name to the Deer Lodge Hospital Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3. A memorial service for James will be held on Wednesday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with interment and reception to follow. Dear James, rest in God's care while you rest in our hearts.
