Date of Passing: Nov 26, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJUAN LAMBERTO GOMEZ-PERALES (1926 - 2005) He lived between the mountains and the sea and died with all the love, respect and dignity that he cherished all his life. He was a very good man. Juan Lamberto Gomez-Perales passed away peacefully on November 26, 2005 at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg. He was born in Madrid, Spain in 1926, the son of Luis Gomez Iranzo and Maria del Pilar Perales Laita. He met his wife Helen in Ibiza where they lived in an old mill at the edge of an ancient Phoenician cemetery, where his ashes will eventually be scattered. After coming to Canada in 1958 with his wife and young son, he studied and practiced Social Work in Winnipeg and the northern regions of Manitoba. He was instrumental in teaching and promoting the sport of fencing in Canada and has inspired generations of young people with his passion for the sport, teaching at the Manitoba Theatre School and at the University of Winnipeg. Some of his students were like family to him and share in his family's grief. He is survived, in Spain, by his brother Jose Luis; his sister-in-law Josefina and cousin Josefina de la Gresa, and in Canada by his wife Helen (nee Kohuska); his three children, Juan, Natalia (Lia) and Veronica (Niki); his grandchildren, Camila, Zachary, Jordan, Eamonn, and Liam; his mother-in-law Natalia Kohuska; his daughter-in-law Lorna and his sons-in-law, Tom and Brian. He was a wonderful man... You know what that means? - Full of Wonder. In lieu of sending flowers, please feel free to make a contribution in his memory to a children's charity or your local fencing club. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

Although I left POS to travel through Europe for a year in 1968/69 and emigrated to the United States in 1969, I have often thought about, and had fond memories of my friend Juan over subsequent years, and on this day in November 2015, I "Googled" him... only to find belatedly that he has passed away. I did not know his children personally, but I did know Helen. My condolences and best wishes to you Helen, and to your friends and family. I was the youngest of the original MSP/POS workers, but at 79 I'm getting up there now. I am retired, and my avocation is performing on stage, and teaching voice to old people like myself. Juan was a wonderful fellow who loved life and rarely had anything other than good things to say about anyone. We shared some wonderful personal and professional experiences, and we loved to share stories together. Although I always knew that Juan was a one-woman man, Helen, he was a natural charmer, and when we encountered a pretty woman, his eyes and his manner pushed the rest of us guys into the shadows, never to be noticed. Love to you all, Bill Fry. - Posted by: Wiliam G. (Bill) Fry (Co-worker and friend in Winnipeg's "Multi-Service Project" (1963-66), and "People's Opportunity Serv) on: Nov 14, 2015
