Date of Passing: May 10, 2006
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. FRANK JOHN LONE 1922 - 2006 With heavy hearts but with joyful memories, the family of Dr. Frank John Lone announces the loss of a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dad passed away on May 10, less than a week after he lost Isobell the love of his life. Fast friends and sweethearts, it is comforting for us to know that their separation from each other was a short one. Dad graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1945 with an M.D. He began his medical career in a general practice in Killarney, MB as the quintessential country doctor. In 1956 he started post-graduate work in Winnipeg and New York City at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital for Cancer receiving his fellowship in Pathology in 1960. The family moved to Thunder Bay where Dad assumed the duties of Director Chief Pathologist of both the Port Arthur General and St. Joseph's Hospitals. He was a consulting Pathologist to the surrounding smaller hospitals. His involvement and contributions to the medical community were many. He was a member of the Ontario Association of Pathologists serving as a board member, secretary and finally president of the association. His Curriculum Vitae fills pages detailing his many accomplishments. One of which he was most proud was the review of the laboratory services in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan; he made recommendations that underlie many of the current practices. Dad took a great deal of interest in the development of Lakehead University; beginning as a board member and eventually becoming the Chairman of the Board for three years. He also lectured in microbiology for two years in the Bachelor of Nursing Program. However what he held most dear was his family: his wife Isobell (Betts) of 59 years; his three daughters, Barbara (Fergus Penner), Monica and Cynthia (Brant Long); his four grandchildren, Christopher, Hilary, Julian and Virginia; his five great-grandchildren, Kiefer, Amaia, Jackson, Wesley and Tessa with a sixth on the way. We have many special memories of both our Mum and Dad that we will cherish always as we learn to move forward without them. At his request no service will be held. We will celebrate our parent's lives in a private ceremony at a later date. We would like to express our thanks to all those wonderful people at the Grace Hospital who supported us and our parents as they made their final journey. Memorial donations may be made to Lakehead University, 955 Oliver Rd., Thunder Bay, ON, P7B 5E1 or to the Canadian Cancer Society, MB Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. A Salutation of the Dawn Listen to the salutation to the dawn, Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life, In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of our existence. The bliss of growth, the splendour of beauty, For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, But today well spent makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope Look well therefore to this day. Such is the salutation to the dawn Kadidasa NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200

I was recently clearing my bookshelf of some antique medical textbooks (colorplates of anatomical diagrams) I purchased at a resale shop in Scottsdale, Arizona. I had previously overlooked an inscription in one of the books where Mr. Lone wrote "Frank Lone, Manitoba Medical College" and realized that he also initialed the 7 books and placed stickers with his campus address in several. Seeing these inscriptions made me think about the objects my late grandparents may have touched that are floating around in the world and how much I might enjoy having them. Through googling it also seems like Medicine was an important aspect of Mr. Lone's life and I wanted to reach out and offer to return these heirlooms to his family if they want them. Please email me if you are an interested family member or if you can put me in contact with a family member.
