NELS STAVENJORD (STAV) Surrounded by love, Nels passed away May 24, 2006 at the age of 85. Nels shared his life with Marge, his loving wife, for 59 years; their children, Karen and Cam (Calgary), Tannis and Don (Winnipeg), Bruce and Ann (Vancouver); grandchildren, Scott (Hannah), Ryan, David (Katyna), Paul, Lindsey (Dave), Michelle (Sean): and great-grandchildren, Holly, Ava and Preston. Nels also leaves brothers and sisters, Goodie, Roy, Art and Irene; and many special nieces and nephews. Nels was a man with extraordinary sense of duty, strong moral fortitude, and a belief in God that defined his life. He exemplified qualities of decency, honesty, and commitment, blended with a great capacity to love and protect those close to him. Nels was born in Norway, August 23, 1920 and came to Canada in 1926. His life long devotion to service began when he became a member of the RCMP in which he served for 26 years. It was his days as a Mountie that he cherished the most. Nels went on to a second career in the Provincial Government for 19 years. After retiring, Nels remained active in the RCMP Veteran's Association. He also belonged to the Masonic Order Ophir Lodge. He was an active member of St. Andrew's Anglican Church. Once he retired, Nels was able to golf and travel extensively, returning to his homeland of Norway. But it was his love of family that best defined Nels. Marge, the love of his life, was always at his side. The compassion and caring he provided for Marge was extraordinary. He was always there to love and support his children and be a role model for his grandchildren. A quiet and humble man, he took pride in the joy and accomplishment of others. As was his way, Nels moved on in peace with everything organized. He has finished his work and is now embraced by total love. Our family would like to thank all the health and home care providers who worked so compassionately with Nels over the last two years. We are especially grateful for the love and caring of the Grace Hospice volunteers and staff. A celebration of Nels' life will be held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Ave., on Monday May 29 at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Nels' memory to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4A6, The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1932, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0G7, or to the Grace Hospice, 260 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3R5.
