WILLIAM (BILL) EDWARD PANKIW April 12, 1935 - May 29, 2006 With deep sadness, the family of Bill regrets to announce his passing on May 29, 2006, at Health Sciences Centre at the age of 71. Left to cherish his loving memory are his wife Wilma of 35 years, daughter Karen Viveiros (Chris), son Randy (fiancée Penny), sister June Schilling (Don), Uncle John Forostiak and mother-in-law Phyllis Norrie. Also left are brother-in-law Dennis Norrie (Gwenda), sister-in-law Marilyn Shukys (Roman) and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was predeceased by his parents Alex and Annie and father-in-law John Norrie. Bill lived in Point Douglas for the first half of his life. He attended Norquay School and St. John's High School, after which he worked for Sherwin-Williams Paints. Bill was then employed with the Manitoba Telephone System for 35 years, forging a successful and varied career that ended in well-deserved retirement in 1992. As newlyweds, Bill and Wilma moved to Southdale where they raised their children and retired. Bill took fatherhood very seriously and stressed the value of hard work, a good education and an honest, ethical lifestyle. He was a dependable, devoted husband and friend. We fondly recall many memories of Bill's life. He loved sports, especially baseball, bowling and hockey, and he had a lifelong passion for golf. Bill had been a member of the Transcona Golf Club since 1969, and was very proud of the three holes-in-one he achieved there. He bowled the last 14 years of his life with the MTS Pioneers Life Member Bowling League, and was usually a top scorer in a category at the annual April wind-up banquets. Bill also had a love for fishing, especially with son Randy and his friends. In addition to many wonderful camping / fishing trips, Bill always ensured the family had annual vacations to explore new places. He traveled to Arizona the past 13 winters, where he enjoyed spending time with his beloved sister and brother-in-law. The family wishes to thank the staff of Health Sciences Centre for their thorough and compassionate care - especially Drs. Krcek, Marchuk, Aoki, Agha-Khani and Wajstaub, as well as the wonderful nursing staff on Ward GA5. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 3, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (across from the Mint). Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to support the valuable work of CancerCare Manitoba, ON 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
