HEATHER BONNIE SLAYEN After a short but courageous battle with ovarian cancer, Heather passed away May 27, 2006 at St. Boniface Hospital. Heather was predeceased by her father, Hookey Slayen. She is survived by her mother, Ruth Slayen; siblings, Reesa (Martin), Sharon Kaplan, and Stuart Slayen (Shira); nieces and nephews, Adam, Blair, Alyssa, Alana, Cari and Noah; close family friend Walter Bargenda; and numerous relatives and friends. Heather was born in 1951 in Winnipeg. She graduated from Talmud Torah and Garden City Collegiate. She earned a teaching certificate from the University of Manitoba, but spent most of her career as an office manager with a variety of companies in Toronto and Winnipeg. Most notably, she worked with her father managing Fruta Produce, taking over the business for over a decade after he passed away in 1986. Heather was passionate about family, especially her nieces and nephews. She loved spending time with them and always had a gift or a treat in hand. She was generous with family, friends and even strangers. She was a person of deep moral conviction and character, always dealing honourably with others. And she had a wonderful sense of humour. Heather's funeral was held May 30 at Congregation Etz Chayim. Services were conducted by Rabbi Henry Balser and Tracy Kasner-Greaves. Pallbearers were Adam, Martin, Alvin Slayen, David Pesochin, Larry Kussin and Walter Bargenda. Heather's family extends its thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of 3B at St. Boniface Hospital. Heather fought her illness, and ultimately succumbed, in an environment of dignity, compassion and goodness. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Heather's memory is encouraged to contribute to CancerCare Manitoba or any charity of choice.
