MARTEL 1924 - 2006 Peacefully, on June 28, 2006 after a brief illness, Armand, at the age of 81 years, slipped quietly into the arms of Jesus. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 59 years, Rita (Rochon); daughters, Paulette and Suzanne; son-in-law Richard Walker and the lights of his life, Danielle and Jamie Walker, his beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Juliette Perron (Barney, predeceased); his brothers, André (Noëlla) and Paul (Darlene); his sisters-in-law, Jeanne Bernuy (George, predeceased) and Lucille Rochon (Oscar, predeceased) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Romeo and Lucien and by his sister Dora Ludwick; brother-in-law Gaston Rochon and sister-in-law Annette Cormier. Armand was born in St.-Boniface and attended Ecole Provencher. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served on various bases in Canada during the Second World War. Following the war, Armand was employed by Westeel Roscoe where he worked until his retirement in 1989. Armand and Rita loved to dance and most Saturday evenings you would find them cutting a rug either at the Royal Canadian Legion, where he was a lifetime member, or at Le Club LaVerendrye. They also loved to travel and took yearly winter holidays especially in California or Arizona. Armand was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed building and fixing things in his workshop. Nothing pleased him more than to have Danielle or Jamie ask him when they were little, Pépère fix? . During his retirement years, Armand took great pleasure in tending his vegetable garden and flowerbeds. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Cathedral. A private family interment will be held after the mass and reception. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of their choice. The family would like to thank the staff of 3E at the Riverview Health Centre for making Armand's last days as comfortable as possible. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements, 775-2220.
