Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPEGGY (MARGARET) VOKEY September 18, 1918 - July 17, 2006 It is with love we remember and celebrate the life of our Mom, Peggy (Margaret) Vokey. Mom passed away on July 17, 2006, two months short of her 88th birthday. A celebration of her life will be held on August 22, 2006 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave., at 12:30 p.m. Mom was born to Robert and Jeannie Simpson in Airdrie, Scotland in 1918. She had a difficult life but refused to let this impact her. As a child she was unable to complete her education and achieve her dream of becoming a nurse. Her schooling was interrupted to care for her ailing mother and younger siblings - a responsibility she took seriously. Mom was a very hard worker, and at a very young age contributed to the family income. She was frugal, but generous to family and friends, not only financially but with her time and energy. She was helpful. She was an anchor to those in need. It was because of her life experiences that she encouraged us to achieve the best possible education we could, to be responsible, and independent. She taught us life's lessons with a gentle hand but she was feisty and could wrestle you with affection. She loved us unconditionally. She was a fun Mom and she played with us, encouraged our friendships and welcomed our friends into her home. She always protected us and supported us. She gave us the freedom to have our own adventures. She had her share of sorrows - losing an infant son, Wally Robert, in 1954. she was widowed in 1970, at the age of 51, with the sudden death of her husband Harold but she still moved forward with life, working first with PaddleWheel Boat Tours, and then at Kildonan Golf Course. Despite her lack of formal schooling, she was smart and great with numbers, serving as financial secretary of the Rising Star Lodge for 45 years. Peggy was a good sport and loved her weekly bowling. She also loved music and still attended concerts. Mom was a special Nan to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved them, played with them, and was concerned about them. They will miss her. We are grateful for the life she gave us and the love she showed us. This love and concern for family and friends remained to the end despite her long struggle with dementia. We thank all who valued her gift of friendship and remembered her. Mom is survived by her daughter Elaine (Richard), son Harold (Dawn), and son Barry (Allison), grand children Jennifer (Dev), Allison (Sheldon), Jonathan (Tanya), Tammy (Mike), Chas, Justin, and Josh, and Great Nan is also survived by Emily, Christopher, Steven, Kellie, Jessica and Cody. Mom is also survived by her sisters-in-law Ethel and Bette, cousin Jen (Jim), brother-in-law Joe, and numerous nieces and nephews. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Harold, son Wally, sisters Elizabeth, Jean, and Frances, her brothers John and Robert, sisters-in-law Flo and Joyce, and brothers-in-law Les, Wally, Mel, Ray, and Bunt. If family and friends so desire donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or, another charity of ones' choice.
