KYRA LYNN BROWN (nee IRWIN) June 7, 1947 - August 28, 2006. At the age of 59, after a brief but courageous fight against cancer, Kyra passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre with her family by her side. Lovingly remembered by her husband Hugh of Winnipeg; sons Scott (Michelle Barnet) of Winnipeg and Neil of Bracebridge, ON; mother Lyn Irwin of Winnipeg; sister Terry of Winnipeg Beach, MB and brother Kelly of Dartmouth, NS. She was predeceased by her father Ernie Irwin in 2005. Shortly after she was born - in Portage la Prairie, MB - her family moved to Winnipeg and eventually settled in Elmwood. Raised there, she later graduated from Elmwood High School before attending Tec. Voc. High, where she attained a Business Education Diploma in 1965. Her first job was with the London Life Insurance Company. She left in 1972 to spend the next eight years raising her sons, before returning to a part time position with the University of Manitoba Alumni Association. Later she moved to the University's newly established Department of Private Funding where she excelled at training the department's student employees and coordinating fundraising efforts as the Assistant Manager of the Annual Giving program until her retirement in 2004. Kyra spent many years in volunteer service giving her time to many organizations, including the Greater Winnipeg and Kildonan Kinette Clubs, Manitoba Theatre Centre and, later, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. She had a very outgoing and giving personality and was always thinking of others. Throughout her life, she made many strong and lasting friendships, both at work and socially. She was an avid cook and loved to entertain with Hugh, at their home in Winnipeg and family cottage in Lac du Bonnet. Holidays in Mexico were a much anticipated winter getaway. Recently, Kyra enjoyed the camaraderie of the Prairie Pathfinders, building new friendships on their long hikes throughout southern Manitoba. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Health Sciences Centre, Cancer Care Manitoba, and Riverview Health Centre for the exceptional care, respect and many kindnesses given to Kyra during her illness. Also, our sincerest appreciation to all of Kyra's many friends for their enduring dedication to Kyra, and the generous support given to our family during this time. A viewing will take place one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday September 5, 2006 at the Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, with Reverend R.L. Brownlie officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held afterwards. Cremation will take place after the service with interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Burton, Hart Brown, Doug Constable, Marcel Baril, Laurence Bertram and Bob Garnett. Honorary Pallbearers are Sharon Sargent, Barb Kotyk, Susan Goodall, Gordon Irwin, Ted Irwin and Bob Copeland. If so desired, donations in Kyra's memory would be greatly appreciated and may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or Riverview Health Centre Foundation.
