ROBERT JAY SLOAN Bob was born on St. Valentine's Day 1943 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He received training in electronics while serving in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968 and was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri in 1974. These led to an international career in engineering, primarily telecommunications, working in a variety of locations in the United States and Canada, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Senegal and Jordan. He worked with CTV at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. The last 12 years of his career centered on providing information technology to improve the educational opportunities for children in remote areas and developing countries. He had a lifelong interest in learning about the natural sciences and ancient history through reading and travelling extensively. His daughter, Jame, was born in Germany while Bob served in the military. Jennifer was born while he went to University, where he helped launch the recycling movement in Columbia, Missouri. Bob met Joanne while working in Kenya in 1986. They were married in 1988 and Bob moved to Canada in 1989. He was qualified as a PADI diver and a light plane pilot and learned to ski later in life. He enjoyed good food and cooking fantastic meals for family and friends was a favourite pastime. Nothing could compare to his cheesecake and wonders on the grill, and a taste of his concoctions could get just about anyone addicted to limes and Tabasco. He was a kind and friendly man who could strike up a conversation with anyone he met, and usually did. His sense of humour drew many people to him. Bob died peacefully on September 15, 2006 after a short battle with lung cancer. His family wishes to thank the physicians and staff of CancerCare Manitoba and the WRHA for their compassionate care. He is survived by his wife Joanne Embree, daughters, Jame Sloan and Jennifer (Regis) Mazet, granddaughter ChloƩ Mazet, mother MaryAnn Gillmore, brother James Brett Sloan and sister Hollee Greenhoff; all whom he loved dearly. His memory will remain forever in their hearts A memorial service will be held on October 7, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's College Chapel, University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus, 92 Dysart St., Winnipeg, Reverend John Holmen presiding. Friends who wish to do so may make a donation in Bob's name to CancerCare Manitoba or another charity of their choice.
