A. M. (MEL) JENKINS On December 17, 2006, peacefully in the presence of his family, Mel Jenkins passed away at the age of 84 years. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 62 years, Verna; son David (Lilianne); grandsons, Wesley (Nikki) and Neil (Tiphanee); great-grandchildren, Mya, Keegan and Mason; sister Barbara Hryniuk (Lou); sisters-in-law, Eleanor Christian and Bev Tinney; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Lottie; brother Fred and sister Shirley Clarke (Pat). Mel served for four years in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War, including two years overseas. He was employed by Eatons from 1940 to 1977 and Jenkins Carpets (Brandon) from 1979 until his retirement in 1988 when Mel and Verna returned to Winnipeg. He was a Life Member of the Scottish Rite of Manitoba; a former member of Elmhurst Golf Club; Past President, Victoria Curling Club; Past President, Past Presidents Curling Association of Manitoba; a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #9; served with the Lord Selkirk District Boy Scouts for 20 years. Most recently Mel was a member of the Eatons Retired Employees Association, where, in addition to renewing old acquaintances, made many new friends. He was a Past President of the club and actively involved in 5-pin bowling, curling, golf, lawn bowling and their many other social activities. Mel and Verna enjoyed travel and in addition to numerous trips to Canadian and continental U.S. destinations visited the Bahamas and Hawaii. They were always present at the Jenkins/Tinney get-togethers, wherever they were held, and were the last couple on the dance floor at their grandson's wedding last year. Grandpa was always a willing participant in day trips with the family, whether it was to Tinkertown, Oak Hammock, Kenora, Grand Beach or to cheer on Neil in his various sports activities. Mel was always a gentleman and could always be counted on to tell a joke or share a story. His speech at their 50th Wedding Anniversary dinner is well remembered by the family. Our sincere thanks to the Palliative Care nurses who enabled us to care for Mel at home. A memorial service to celebrate Mel's life will be held on Friday, December 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Wheeler's Funeral Chapel, 211 Regent Ave. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
