ORESTE PALUMBO September 19, 1931 December 26, 2006 On Tuesday, Oreste Domenico Palumbo, surrounded by his family, peacefully fell asleep in death after a lengthy battle against cancer. He is survived by his wife Nicetta (nee DiTomo), his sons, Marco, Simone (wife Cherie), Piero, Adriano, as well as four grandchildren, Vincenzo, Savannah, Marco and Sofia. He also leaves behind, his older brother, Emilio (wife Emma), and younger brothers, Loreto (wife Lilliana), Luigi (wife Rosa), Giuseppe (wife Carmelina), and three younger sisters, Angelina (husband Umberto), Antonietta (husband Emilio), and Eliza, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Francesco and mother Rosina. Oreste was born in Montagano, Campobasso, Italia on September 19, 1931, growing up during the difficult years before and after The Second World War. When he was 21, he moved to Switzerland and worked at a greenhouse, beginning a passion that stayed with him to the end of his life. In 1959, he moved to Winnipeg, Canada, working for CN laying rail lines throughout the country. In 1967, he returned to Italy, where he met and married Nicetta on February 10, 1968. Two months later, they would return as a family to Winnipeg. There, they raised their four sons. Oreste was very diligent as a provider, working for CN in the Transcona Roundhouse until he retired in 1992. He worked hard to raise his sons to also work hard and be productive citizens. He enjoyed being with his family, especially when he could have lupini beans and a glass of wine along with his brothers Emilio and Giuseppe, discussing their experiences in their beloved hometown Montagano, as well as the important topics of the day. His pride and joy were his four grandchildren. He loved them dearly, and was very pleased to see each one grow up to be such beautiful persons, inside and out. History, opera, and the Bible were interests that he spent time with as he was able. His passion, however, was taking care of his garden, and especially his fig trees in the greenhouse. Nicetta, along with their sons, look forward to the time when mankind's enemy, death, will be no more, and instead be able to greet all their loved ones back from the grave. (1 Corinthians 15:26; Revelation 20:13, 14; Revelation 21: 4; Acts 24:15) The Palumbo family, especially Nicetta, want to thank all the health care professionals who compassionately helped make Oreste's last days comfortable, including his palliative care nurse, Maryanne Medland, and the staff at Riverview Health Centre and St. Boniface Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Mr. Gonzalo Navarro presiding. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
