ILEEN ELEANOR STEWART (nee STODDART) April 20, 1921 - December 30, 2006 After a brief illness, Ileen passed away on Saturday, December 30 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She was predeceased by her father Carl Alexander Stoddart and her mother Myrtle Leverna Roberts. She is lovingly remembered by her brother Norman Lindsay Stoddart and his wife Margaret, her nephew Paul Lindsay Stoddart and her niece Laura Ileen Grealis. Ileen was born in Winnipeg, MB. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in 1943 and a Masters Degree in Zoology from the University of Minnesota in 1948. Ileen worked as a Research Assistant in the Dight Institute for Human Genetics (University of Minnesota) conducting genetic cancer research. She then moved to Washington, DC to become Editor of Publication and Deputy Director of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. In 1959 she became Associate Program Director of the National Science Foundation where she conducted grant reviews, surveys and represented NSF at national and international meetings. She moved in 1967 to the National Institutes of Health where she held the position of a Health Sciences Administrator until her retirement in 1995. It was here that she received the NIH Directors Award in 1988. Ileen was an active and informed traveller to many parts of the world, particularly where there were things of biological or archaeological interest. She lived in the Washington, DC area from 1951 until her move to the Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in 2004. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Wilson Health Care Centre at Asbury, as well as those at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for their most kind care and support. Cremation has taken place and at Ileen's request there will be no formal service.
