Sophia is lovingly remembered by her son Wolodymyr; daughter-in-law Maria; her grandchildren, Oksana, Rostyslav (Melissa) and great-granddaughter Alainna; numerous cousins and family in Ukraine and Canada. She was predeceased by her parents, Josephat and Kateryna Ostapiw; sisters, Maria and Stephania; husband Dmytro and grandson Taras. Sophia was born in the village Ozidiw in the Lviv region of Western Ukraine. She became a seamstress at a young age and loved to do this work all her life. In 1943, she married Dmytro Melnyk and after being together only nine months, they were separated by war. After caring for her son through this difficult time, in 1953, she was fortunate enough to hear of her husband's survival and that he was living in Canada. In 1972, Sophia came to Winnipeg to be reunited with her husband. She devoted much of her time to the Church, becoming an active member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. There she found spiritual fulfillment through prayers and songs. She was also a member of Institute Prosvita and Ukrainian Social Services of Manitoba. In 1979, with great joy, Sophia and Dmytro sponsored her son and his family to immigrate to Winnipeg. Even though she lived through a difficult life, battling many ailments along the way, she always loved life and was devoted in taking care of family and friends. The family wishes to express thanks to Dr. B. Gorski and all the medical staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care. Panakhyda will be sung 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 26 at Sts.
