DR. SAM STEINBERG MD FCFP Peacefully on January 26, 2007, with his family at his side, Sam Steinberg passed away at the St. Boniface General Hospital. He is survived by his daughter Fran (Lewis); his son Bob (Julie) and their mother Edythe; his grandchildren, Jason, Seth and Raffie Rosenberg, David, Aaron and Sara Steinberg and their mother Pauline. He was predeceased by his parents, Goldie and Jack Steinberg and his brother Joseph Steinberg Halamish. Sam was born in Winnipeg, MB. He attended Machray and St. John's High School. He married his high school sweetheart and then when war broke out in 1942, joined the RCAF and spent four and one half years overseas working in radar. After the war, he returned home to his bride only to be diagnosed with Tuberculosis and put in hospital for almost a year. This long recuperation gave him time to think and he returned to school with the goal to become a doctor. He graduated from medial school on 1954 and practised medicine until September 2006. Sam dedicated his life to medicine and to his patients. He felt that it was a privilege to get to know them and to be part of their lives. He enjoyed learning and attended continuing medical education dinners and talks until his illness forced him to be in hospital. He became a Certificant of the College of Family Physicians in 1971. In November 2006, he travelled to Quebec to receive his Fellowship in Family Medicine. Although weakened by his illness, he walked across the stage to a standing ovation, an event that he said was a perfect end to a wonderful career. Sam's family was always formost in his thoughts. Although he and his wife Edythe did not stay married they were loving friends to the end. When diagnosed with a terminal illness, his first thoughts were to his grandchildren wanting to make sure that they understood that he was not afraid and that he had had a great life and was at peace. He was touched by all those who visited him in the hospital, his special friend Sheila, his medical school classmates and colleagues who laughed and joked with him, his patients and friends, and his family who were there to share his life and support and cherish him in death. Thanks to Dr. Eisenstadt, Dr. Schroeder and Kim Paradoski at CancerCare Manitoba for their tremendous support to Sam and his daughter. Thanks also to Dr. Yaffe, Tracy and all the nurses, housestaff and orderlies on 7AW at St. Boniface General Hospital. In accordance with Sam's wishes, a funeral was held at Congregation Etz Chayim on January 29 with interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Jason and Seth Rosenberg, David and Aaron Steinberg, son-in-law Lewis Rosenberg and daughter-in-law Pauline Steinberg. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Raffie Rosenberg and Sara Steinberg. His soul has returned to the Lord who gave it where he will have eternal life. Rest in peace Zaida.
