Date of Passing: Mar 06, 2007
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLEAH RUTH SUPERSTEIN Leah Ruth Superstein, beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, friend, and supporter of cultural life in Canada, United States and Israel, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2007. She brightly touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to cross her path. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1926. She not only was the first music student at the University of Manitoba, she was the inspiration for the establishment of the University's program in music which continues to this day. Leah was a superb pianist and composer in her own right. Rather than choosing a career in music, she chose a career of family and philanthropy in the arts. Leah was President of Baramy Investments Ltd. and affiliated companies. Baramy is a privately held real estate investment company with a portfolio of over 1.3 million square feet of industrial and commercial properties along with over 550 acres of developable land. Leah was actively involved in the management and day-to-day operations of the companies. During her tenure as President she took great pride in operating one of the finest portfolios of industrial and commercial properties in Western Canada. She lived life to the fullest and enriched a wide variety of cultural organizations and artists in Canada, the United States and beyond. The world of the arts has lost a major benefactor, who supported a diverse group of cultural institutions, including the arts at UCLA and USC, the Young Musicians Foundation, The National Arts Centre (Ottawa), the American Israel Cultural Foundation, the Los Angeles Music Center, the Los Angeles Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the American Ballet Theater, friends of the Israel Philharmonic, the Geffen Playhouse, the Hammer Museum, the American Youth Symphony, the American Friends of the Tel Aviv University, the Youth America Grand Prix, and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA). Leah was a force of life and a force of nature. All who knew her can give testimony to a dear friend, and a person who has made this world a much better place. She deeply recognized the arts as a way to bring people together of all backgrounds and walks of life and dedicated her life to this purpose. Services will be at the Hillside Memorial Park at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2007, 6001 Centinela Ave. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), or the Leah and Larry Superstein Endowed Chair for Music at UCLA, or the Friends of the Israel Philharmonic.
