TOBY (TOOTS) LUDWIG Toby (Toots) Ludwig passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2007, days before her 94th birthday. She was born in Winnipeg to Pearl and Si Hershberg, the fourth of seven children. She was a top student at St. John's Tech, excelling in mathematics, but her education was interrupted by the Depression. To help support her family through those difficult years, Toots worked as a cashier at the historic Beacon Theatre. She married Chuck Ludwig in 1937 and had two daughters, Sandy and Alicia. Once her children were in school, Toots continued to work outside the home, first at the Cameo dress shop on Portage Avenue and later at The Glass House, a china and giftware shop on Graham Avenue. No matter where she worked, on Fridays, she was in the kitchen, preparing a special dinner for her family. Her knishes, kreplach, taiglech and bagels were legendary. Toots and Chuck were devoted to each other through 68 years of marriage. After retiring, they met new friends over coffee at McDonalds and while wintering in California. Throughout her life, what made Toots most happy was being with her family. She was devoted to her husband, her parents and her brothers and sisters. She was a loving mother to her two daughters. She was an enthusiastic gramma, eager to help nurture her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the attentive care provided to Toots during her last years by the staff at the Sharon Home Kanee Centre. Toots is survived by her daughters, Sandy Hurwitz (Syd Palansky) and Alicia Matas (Robert), her grandchildren, Paula (Jeff Trossman), Hayley-Ann (Anthony Swartz) Jared Matas (Cheryl Weiner) and Max Matas (Danya Rogen) and her great-granddaughters, Rebecca and Lauren, her sister Lola Roadburg and sisters-in-law, Alice Hershberg and Betty Hershberg. Her husband Chuck passed away on November 18, 2005. The funeral was held on April 13. The pallbearers were Syd and Bruce Palansky, Robert and Jared Matas, Dane Hershberg and Jeffrey Kowall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sharon Home, 146 Magnus Avenue in Winnipeg or a charity of your choice.
