DMYTRO GERMAN It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their father and gido, Dmytro German, on April 18, 2007. He died peacefully in his sleep at his home. He is survived by his daughter Olga Lockwood and son Borys (Pat) German, grandchildren, Philip and Laura Lockwood and Shannon and Kimberly German, and relatives in Canada, the US, Ukraine and Russia. Dmytro was born November 6, 1923 in Dzurkiv, Halychyna, Ukraine, where he lived with his brother and three sisters. He emigrated to Canada in 1949 and moved to Flin Flon to work as a welder with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. In 1953, he married Leokadia (Laura) Gorzen, and they raised two children. After 33 years, Dmytro retired and they moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their daughter and son, who were working in their respective professions as a physiotherapist and an engineer. Dmytro was active in family affairs and particularity his grandchildren's numerous school, music and sports functions. It brought him great pride and joy to see his children and grandchildren succeed in school and especially music, which reminded him of his participation in Ukrainian singing and dancing. He liked to read Ukrainian poetry, historical novels and kept himself informed about the current political and economic state of his beloved Ukraine and the rest of the world. He was also active in Ukrainian and church communities, hospital visitations, and meeting with his friends at Garden City Shopping Centre. In his early years he was involved with the Ukrainian Canadian Committee, the Ukrainian Reading Association, the League for the Liberation of Ukraine, the Red Cross, and the Sokil Students Society. Dmytro was a philanthropist generously donating to organizations such as the Kiev University, the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences, aid to the Ukrainian Army Soldiers, the Ukrainian Medical Charitable Service, the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian Embassy Fund, and the Children of Chernobyl Charitable Fund. He also never ignored those who needed help, including relatives requiring medical treatments in Ukraine or Russia, and assisting individuals with travel costs to Canada, finding employment, or needing clothing or shelter. Prayers will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home on Thursday, April 26, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be at held at Glen Eden Funeral Home on Friday, April 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Any of Dmytro's friends that require the need of transportation, please call Borys German at 334-7435 by noon on Wednesday, April 25.
