LORNA ELEANOR HUGHES October 29, 1931 - May 1, 2007 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their beloved mother and grandmother, Lorna (Paton) Hughes at St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at the age of 75 years. Lorna was predeceased by Bill, her husband of 52 years in April 2003, and by her sister Doreen. Lorna leaves to cherish her memory her son Brian (Susan); daughters, Nancy Hughes (Gerry Kaplan), Catherine (Larry) Mudge; grandchild-ren, Elizabeth, Lindsay, Emily, Jeff, Lauren, Michael, Andrea and Daniel; her brother Vern Paton and many other relatives and friends. Lorna was born in The Pas and spent her early years in Northern Manitoba where her father was a miner. Later moving to Winnipeg's North End, Lorna attended Luxton School and St. John's High. Lorna and Bill married in 1950 and settled on Kylemore Avenue in Fort Rouge in 1957, where they remained until 1996. Lorna returned to work outside the home in 1965 and was employed by the Manitoba Government until retirement. She worked in Land Titles and the Sheriff's Office prior to spending many years and making many great friends in Surrogate Court. The Hughes family built a cottage on Malachi Lake in 1952. Lorna and Bill loved spending summer vacations, weekends and extended stays there after retirement and made many enduring friendships. Lorna was an avid reader and an accomplished seamstress and knitter. She enthusiastically, but cautiously, enjoyed the casinos and was luckier than most. She met a wonderful new gang of friends at the apartment on St. Anne's and joined in cards, movie nights, luncheon outings and all celebrations. We know she will be missed at Bingo! The family extends sincere thanks to the staff on Four East at St. Boniface Hospital for their excellent care and kind support. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 8 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., with a gathering of family and friends to follow in the reception centre. According to Lorna's wishes, cremation has taken place. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
