RICHARD FISCHER 1940 - 2007 In the early evening hours of Thursday, May 24, 2007, Richard died at the hospital in Pinawa, Manitoba, casting a pall of sadness over those who knew and loved him. He is survived by Merle, his wife of 40 years; their son Ryan (Nancy); their daughter Holly Besau (Greg); grandchildren (Christian and Kayla); his mother; and his brother George (Beverley). Richard immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1954, settling in Winnipeg, where he lived until several years ago. At 18 years of age he met his future wife, a mere child of 12 years of age, developing a friendship, love, and respect that lasted throughout their life together. During his working life, Richard was employed by Canada Packers for 28 years, until their closure. Following this, he began a career in long-haul trucking, from which he retired in the summer of 2005. Richard was a man of simplicities and yet complexities. He was kind, generous, gentle and caring, but at times could also be loud and gruff. An avid reader, Richard had knowledge and opinions on virtually any subject, and was only too happy to share them; he loved a good discussion, and considered verbal jousting an Olympic sport (he had several gold medals!). But those who truly knew him recognized that beneath this rough exterior beat the heart of a teddy bear. Richard was a lover of nature and the outdoors. Throughout his life he enjoyed camping and fishing, and could be known to catch a fish when others could not. He relished the beauty of a sunset, the majesty of the night sky, and the privilege of a fleeting glimpse of wildlife. His dreams of living among the lakes and evergreens came true with a move to Pinawa, Manitoba. His constant companion was his siamese cat Shadow, who owned him, and could do absolutely no wrong. His greatest love and pride were his family. He was my dearest love and my best friend and will be sorely missed. Cremation has taken place, and as per his wishes no funeral will be held. An open house gathering for family and friends to celebrate his life will take place at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, at 78 Palms Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Saturday, June 9, 2007, commencing at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be sent to the Pinawa Hospital or to the Winnipeg Humane Society. This is not good-bye, my sweetheart, but a brief interlude until we meet again.... Arrangements are entrusted to Russell Funeral Homes Ltd.
