ALFRED M. (ALF) SOBKOWICH Peacefully, on Monday, June 11, 2007, Alf Sobkowich passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 79 years. He was predeceased by his parents. Alf will be fondly remembered by his wife Erika; brother David; children, Cheryl Cooper, Sandra Wiebe (Jake), Robert (Rita) and Richard; grandchildren, Natalie Wood (Jason), Sasha and Christopher Wiebe, and Daniel Sobkowich; great-grandchildren, Jaret and Brooklyn Wood; sister-in-law Edith Jorgensen (Bill); niece Debbie Bridgwater (Greg) and family; as well as aunts, many cousins, extended family and friends. Alf was self-employed in the life insurance and financial services industry for many years and was very involved in sports as a coach and player. He bowled, curled, played golf, hockey, baseball, football, lacrosse and snooker. He coached the Isaac Brock Barons Junior Men's Baseball Team, and then managed the Transcona Atomics Senior Men's Team to five provincial titles between 1963 to 1968. Alf and the Transcona Atomics Team were inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. Alf also coached both his sons' hockey teams to championships at Melrose Community Club. As an avid golfer, long time member and past President of Rossmere County Club, Alf participated on many committees. As a competitor, Alf won many tournaments including numerous parent-child provincial championships with both Robert and Richard. Alf was always ready to play new golf courses in his travels. Alf was proud of his family and took great interest in his children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's accomplishments. We will miss him dearly. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the medical and support staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their care. Many thanks to friend and golf partner Ron Matthews and all who visited and called to offer encouragement to Alf and family during his illness. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, June 22, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg with Pastor Bruce Gelhorn officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alf's memory to the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2A6, or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6.
