ANTON JASNIC It is with great sadness and heartache that we announce the passing of Anton Jasnic at St. Boniface General Hospital on Monday, December 3, 2007. Tony is survived by his wife of 52 years Milena; his children, Frank (Julie) and Yolanda (Jerry) Preston; his sister Zelka (Slovenia); his grandchildren, Katie, Mary, and Nadia and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, the United States, Slovenia and Italy. Tony was born in the small village of Vipolze, in Slovenia's wine producing region on February 1, 1927. As a boy he worked in the vineyards surrounding his village where he developed a knack for tending to grapes. In later life he was actually able to successfully grow grapes in Winnipeg's sometimes harsh climate. Tony left his family home when still in his teens and eventually immigrated to Canada when he was 24 years old. At first he worked at a number of jobs, most notably a sugar beet farm in the summer/fall and a hospital in the winter. He ultimately settled in Winnipeg in late 1951 where he met and then married Milena in 1955. Tony retired from Domtar Gypsum (a gypsum wallboard manufacturer) after 39 years of service. He was also an active member of the Slovenian Catholic Church Our Lady of Lourdes since its formation in 1963. Tony embraced Canada and all her gifts and the opportunities that she provided him and his family, while never forgetting his Slovenian heritage and culture. Rosary and viewing will commence on Saturday, December 8 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 95 MacDonald Ave. with Rev. Fr. Stan Gacek officiating. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Emil Mohoric, Jerry Preston, Mickey Poklar, Mario Kostanjevic, Andy Slejko and Toni Pikel. Honorary Pallbearers are Milce Mohoric, Andrej Kostanjevic and Slavko Slejko. Flowers gratefully declined. Because of Tony's great love for children, if friends so desire, donations in Anton's memory may be made to Dorocia's Missions, in care of 47 Quiring Bay, Winnipeg, MB R2G 1Y5.
