Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA MERCES MARTINS It is with sorrow in our hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Maria Merces Martins, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at the age of 75 years. She left with her loving family at her bedside on December 7, 2007 at Seven Oaks Hospital. Maria was born in Sao Roque, Acores on September 24, 1932 and married her husband, Virginio, on this beautiful island just off the coast of Portugal. In 1972, Maria came to Canada in order to give her family a better life. Maria worked as a housekeeper at the General Hospital for 25 years before finally retiring in 1997. Maria believed in family and was always available to comfort, encourage and assist her children and grandchildren. She gave generously to all of those around her and always had something delicious in the oven whenever someone stopped over for a visit. According to Vavo, savouring one of her delectable dishes would always be a remedy for comfort and she was right. Maria was predeceased by her parents, Maria and Joao Machado; her husband Virginio Martins and her brother Jose Machado. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her children Grace, Carlos (Desiree) and Rui; her grandchildren Garry, Brian, Mercege and Jagger; her great-grandson Ryu; her sisters Evelina, Fernanda and Eduarda and her sister-in-law Fatima. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maria's memory may be made to Winnipeg Harvest. Prayers will be said on Thursday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 834 Sherbrook Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14 at Immaculate Conception Church, 181 Austin Street North with Rite of Committal to follow at Assumption Cemetery.
