ISABELLA RAE SMITH, R.N. (nee COWIE) March 3, 1909 - February 7, 2008 Now at peace, after a long and good life, Isabella Rae Smith, aged 98 years, passed away at the Riverview Health Centre on February 7, 2008. Isabelle was predeceased by her dearly loved husband, James Nixon, in 1970, her parents, brother, Robert, and twin sisters, Gladys and Florence. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ken Phernambucq, her beloved grandchildren, Caren and Robert and her especially loved, great-grandson, Brendan. Also surviving Isabelle are her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Lil Smith, nieces and nephews and their families. The youngest of four children, Belle was born in the Town of Miami and grew up on the family farm with wonderful memories of a busy and contented childhood. She attended school in the Rural Municipality of Thompson, and upon completing a basic high school education, enrolled in the school of nursing at the Victoria General Hospital from which she graduated in 1933. From the beginning, she was called upon to use her skills to nurse her mother after a massive stroke. Indeed, she cared for her entire family in sickness and at the end of their lives. After returning to Winnipeg, Belle met her husband-to-be at a dance. They were married at Young United Church on October 12, 1940 and settled in St. Vital. Her home welcomed relatives and friends where she served many a dinner and offered lodging as needed. Belle returned to her profession as night supervisor of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital where her record was one of excellence and dedication. She cared deeply for her patients and their families, as well as her staff. She enjoyed family gatherings, Sunday dinners, rides in the country and any opportunity to have lunch en route. Belle had a deep and unconditional love for her family. She was proud of their achievements and supported their endeavours. Her strength of spirit, compassion, kindness, generosity and wonderful sense of humour are the greatest gifts she leaves to those who loved her. The family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to her dedicated care providers, in particular, Dr. Steven Szirom, Dr. Elizabeth Giesbrecht, her homecare team whose support allowed her to remain in her home until May 2007, St. Boniface General Hospital, Misericordia Interim Care, and the staff of CD1 at the Riverview Health Centre. A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, February 12 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Riverview Health Centre with Rev. Susan Tough officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 2P4, or a charity of one's choice. Thanks be to God for her precious life and her abiding love. LOVE YOU GRANDMA Chapel Lawn 885-9715
