Date of Passing: Feb 18, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNAPOLEON BELANGER Napoleon, our dear father and husband passed away at his home with our mother by his side on Monday, February 18, 2008. Nap was born August 20, 1922 in Selkirk to Alphonse Belanger and Valerie (nee) Bedard. He came from a family of nine children. Dad is survived by Therese, his wife of 59 years and 10 children; Adele (Don), Marcelle (Simon), Alane (John), Raymond (Debbie), Yvette (Alex), Madelene (Mike), Mary Ann (Larry), Michelle (Brian), Robert (Tammy), Jacqueline (Doug), 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jean Young and Alice Desrocher. Raised in Selkirk, Dad lived his life with courage, strength, assertiveness and straight forwardness. Dad was fortunate enough to enjoy a wonderful and healthy 25 years of retirement. His love of nature took him on many daily walks through the streets of Selkirk. Sitting in his backyard, looking out at the world was the best part of his day. He loved his home, his family and mom by his side. Dad served overseas in the Second World War and was fortunate to return to Holland in 1989 and meet with the family who befriended and welcomed him so warmly 50 years earlier. Dad worked at the Selkirk Rolling Mills for 44 years until his retirement. He provided for his family, he worked hard and never complained. Our home was always filled with children, love and happiness. Dad was so proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The grandchildren loved to listen to Grandpa play his mouth organ. Dad had a deep faith in God and a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother. He called her his Beautiful Mary . His strong faith and devotion saw him through many difficult times in his life. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Notre Dame Church, 269 Jemima Street with Fr. Dado Parrenas and Fr. Henryk Laciak officiating. Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Cremation to follow. His Pallbearers are Rowan and Branden Horrick, Bill, Lee and Lindsay Briscoe, and Amanda, Jenna and Phillip Cason. The family would like to thank Dr. Fuchs, the Medical staff and Paramedics at the Selkirk General Hospital for the excellent care and compassion they gave to our father. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Good Bye Dad, we love you. The love and memories we shared will remain in our hearts forever. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

Regarding time great-uncle Nap servied in The Netherlands during WWII... he purchased a small pair of wooden shoes which he gave as a gidt to my mother. I had the privilege of returning these shoes to The Netherlands and gift them to a small WWII museum in the town of Beekbergen, near Arnhem, which specialises in Canadian war memorabilia. They are on display in that museum, along with the story concerning Nap !! A fitting tribute !! Here is a link that speaks of the museum. http://en.tracesofwar.com/article/5525/Collection-40-45.htm - Posted by: Richard Loiselle (son of Lucienne Loiselle née Beaudry) (Extended family) on: Oct 19, 2016
