CHARLES ROY JACKSON 1923 - 2008 Suddenly on February 18, Roy Jackson, beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Dot) Jackson, passed away at Concordia Hospital with his family at his side. Roy will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Marilynne, her partner Bob, grandson Jay, sister Vera, brother Ted, brother-in-law George, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy; parents Adam and Ethel; sister Joyce and husband Ted; brother-in-law Alex; sister-in-law Audrey; and brothers- and sisters-in-law Bill and Edith, Gordon and Jean, and Pat. Dad married Mom in 1948 and they lived together in Transcona until she passed away in 1995. He continued living in the house they shared until his passing. Dad was raised and educated in St. Vital. After graduating in 1940, he joined the Searle Grain Company in the grading department. In 1941, he entered the R.C.A.F. as a pilot and flew B24s out of Ceylon and Burma on long range shipping strikes in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Siam. On cessation of hostilities, he joined the Occupation Force in Brussels and flew transport aircraft on British Overseas Airline routes in Europe. Upon his discharge, Dad returned to the Searle Grain Company. In 1955, he was promoted to Manager of the Grain Inspection and Malting Barley Department. In this capacity he later became Chairman of the North-West Line Association Grading Committee and a Member of the Board of Grain Commissioners' Appeal Tribunal. He remained in the same position and on the same committees after the merger of Searle and Federal Grain Companies. When this merged conglomerate sold out to the Three Wheat Pools, Dad joined the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool as one of their Head Grain Inspectors and Barley Selector. When protein became a main factor in the evaluation of wheat, he set up a program to train the Winnipeg staff and Country Agents in the use and calibration of Infra-red machinery for determining the protein content of wheat and barley. Dad retired in 1988. Dad was a curler and avid golfer. He helped rebuild the old Transcona Golf Course after the Second World War. One of his favourite pastimes was helping friends and relatives build their summer cottages, garages, and recreation rooms. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Our family would like to thank Dr. Wozney and other staff of Transcona Medical Clinic for their care of Dad over the years. Thanks also to the emergency room staff of Concordia Hospital for their kindness and compassion. Special thanks to Dad's neighbours, who looked out for him, and to cousin Fred and big sister Joan for the love that they showed him. As per Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, R3T 0R3, or a charity of your choice.
