Ruth was born on July 23, 1919, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and spent her childhood on Boyd Avenue in the North End. After graduating from St. John's High School, Ruth became a Registered Nurse which took her to Montreal to work for the famous neurosurgeon Dr. Wilder Penfield at the Montreal Neurological Institute.
