JANE SANDERS (SKUBA) -
Date of Passing: Feb 10, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJANE SANDERS (nee SKUBA) 1956 - 2008 Jane's life was cut short on Sunday, February 10, 2008, when she collapsed on the squash court in cardiac arrest. We are grateful for the prompt intervention of those around her at the Winter Club, the first responders, and all the staff at St. Boniface General Hospital Emergency, MICU, CICU and Palliative Care. She fought the good fight but victory was not to be. She left this life quietly on February 25 and is now at peace. She is survived by her husband Robert, children Mary and Lee, parents Maurice and Frances Skuba of Kelowna, sister Mary Woloski (Michael) of Charlottesville, Virginia, brothers Lawrence of Winnipeg and Mark of Kelowna. Her niece Rachel (Jonathan Wood) and nephew John reside in Virginia, and mother-in-law Marjorie Sanders in Manitou. She also leaves to mourn her passing numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Jane was born in Winnipeg. At a young age she moved with her family to the farm west of Selkirk where she grew up. She graduated from Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive High School in Selkirk prior to attending the University of Manitoba where she attained a Bachelor of Nursing in 1978. She was dedicated to Public Health Nursing, first in Transcona, then East Kildonan and finally River Heights. She loved working with mothers and babies and considered her work a dream job. Jane's life was passionate. She loved sport. In high school she enjoyed competitive sports including volleyball, basketball and track and was twice recognized as Athlete of the Year. Her love for sport continued into her adult life. She played Bison basketball at the University of Manitoba until she entered nursing. She was a keen runner, completing the Manitoba Marathon and later running in their shorter events with her children. While honing her tennis game at the Canoe Club, she discovered squash and these two sports became lifetime pursuits at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club and at the Winter Club. She remained fit and healthy until the end. Her children were her greatest passion. Proud of their achievements, she also stood with them in adversity. She wanted the best for her family. With the arrival of a Deaf child, she took two years leave from nursing to ground herself in American Sign Language and remained connected to the Deaf community in Winnipeg. ASL interpretation will be provided at her funeral. She was active in the local Parent-to-Parent Support Group in St. Vital and supported the goals of Special Olympics. The support of St. Amant Centre, Sister Jeannine Corbeil and Father Roland Lanoie of the Spiritual Care Department of St. Boniface Hospital was greatly appreciated and provided comfort through this dark period. They will not be forgotten. In keeping with Jane's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 28 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Timothy Parish, 135 John Forsyth Rd., with Father Phil Daley officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Jane supported the Manitoba Marathon in its goal of building more group homes and also the United Way. Any organization encouraging children to take up racquet sports was also dear to her heart. Rest in peace, Jane. You were loved. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald St. 253-5086
