ANNE GERTRUDE PLOHMAN (nee WERSTIUK) It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mom, who was born after the potatoes were out in 1919 and celebrated her 88th birthday on November 15, 2007, slipped away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Beausejour Hospital. Mom was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Hans, in 1989, by her son Jim (Gloria) in 1974, by brothers, John, Michael and Harry, and by sisters, Carolyn and Antonine. Born in the Fisher Branch area as the youngest child to her parents Jacob and Eva Werstiuk, Mom is survived by sisters, Marie Davis and Lily Carriere, sons, Carl (Shirley), John (Pat), Gary (Shaunda), Grant (Judy) and by daughters, Lorna Schwartz (Ron) and Muriel Gambrel (Jim), as well as 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mom often talked with pride of her 38 years as a teacher in the Interlake area of Manitoba. After graduating from Normal School in 1938, she taught one year in Chatfield before moving to Aston Villa School at Faulkner, where she met her future husband Hans and where they farmed until 1969. Mom continued to teach intermittently while having her six children. As they became school age she went back to teaching full time until her retirement in 1986. Today many people from the Interlake can count themselves as having had Mrs. Plohman for a teacher. In between teaching, raising a family and being a farm wife, Mom found time to serve her community in other ways. She was an active member of the Women's Auxiliary (WA), the first leader of the 4-H Club at Faulkner where she spent many hours establishing the Faulkner Willing Workers Sewing Club and was instrumental in the formation of the first Faulkner Community Club in 1951. Long before television, Mom used to have movie nights for the community at the Faulkner Hall where she would feature films on the old reel-to-reel projectors, from the National Film Board. Mom and Dad moved to Ashern in 1969 where she completed her teaching career. In 1974, just before Christmas, a tragic farm accident claimed the life of her son Jim. This was to drain Mom's spirit and forever change her outlook on Christmas. In 1987, Mom and Dad moved to Beausejour where Mom spent the next 20 years frequently volunteering at the Resource Centre. In her latter years, as her health deteriorated and age took it's toll, Mom immersed herself in reading, often finishing two or three novels a week and when she ran out of books, reading some several times over. Mom always appreciated family visits and loved having something ready to eat no matter when company arrived. Mom will always be lovingly remembered for her unfailing devotion to her family and the strength and dignity with which she faced her battle with cancer. Mom you have shown us the way and we will never forget you. The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Zeiler and the staff at the Beausejour Health Centre who gave extraordinary care to Mom during her final days. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 29 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour, MB., Rev. Stan Richards officiating. Interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
