JOHN SMITH With great sadness we announce the passing of John Smith on Friday, February 29, 2008 at the Fisher Personal Care Home in Fisher Branch, Manitoba at the age of 85 years. John is survived by his sons, Wayne Smith (Lori), Larry Smith (Joan), Rick Smith (Shauna); grandchildren, Dwayne, Mark, Kyle, Ryan, and Stephan; sisters, Mary Thornhill and Annette Bychuk (Paul), and good friend and companion Margaret Swar. John is predeceased by his wife Adeline Smith (Kon); brothers, Mike and Jake; parents, Steffan and Katherine Smith (Malyk). John was born on January 21, 1923 in Kilkenny where he attended school and grew up on the family farm. He hauled pulp and ties. He spent some time in Alberta in his younger years working as a farm hand, he worked in Winnipeg as a welder at Silver Line. John came back to Kilkenny and met his wife, a local Kilkenny girl, Adeline Kon and they were married on October 18, 1952. After his marriage John took over the family homestead and worked the traveling picture show in the surrounding communities. He also worked as a Mechanic at Zuke's and started his career as an Electrician. After many years John co-owned MSR Lumber Store in Fisher Branch (previously Beaver Lumber, currently Fisher Funeral Home). John became semi-retired in 1988 but was still active in helping his son Rick until around the age of 82. John loved dancing, gardening, and farming. He had a great sense of humour, loved socializing, playing guitar, horses, puzzles, cooking cinnamon buns, pies, and donuts. He dearly loved spending time with his family. Pallbearers: Phil Caners, Paul Bychuk, Jr., Mervin Zolkewich, Dale Hrabic, Alan Kon, and Chris Woloshyn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in John's memory to the Fisher Personal Care Home or a charity of your choice. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at the Fisher Personal Care Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Fisher Branch, MB.
