MARGUERITE (MARIE) JANSSENS (nee DEVODDER) On March 6, 2008, after a brief illness, Marguerite passed away at Victoria General Hospital. Marguerite was predeceased by her husband Andre; her son Richard and her brothers, Joseph, Andrew and Gilbert. She is survived by her two daughters, Lee Baekeland (Roger) and Joan Stephens (Ron) and by five sons, Robert (Dawn), James (Doreen), Daniel (Lorraine), Randall (Jocelyne) and Michael (Teresa), as well as by her daughter-in-law Davina, her brother Walter Devodder, her sister Irene Tychonick and her sister-in-law Jo Martin. Also grieving her loss are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. On May 2, 1917, Marguerite, the daughter of Charles and Leontine Devodder, was born at home, in St. Boniface, Manitoba. Married at age 19 and a mother at age 20 Marguerite drew upon all of her talents to raise eight children, hold down several part-time jobs, do volunteer work for her church and the community, as well as to support her husband in his capacity as president of The Belgian Club. In her later years she also served The Belgian Club as its Seniors Committee president. In her lifelong devotion to the Belgian Sacred Heart Church, she gave generously of her time as church board member and as president of the Catholic Women's League . Marguerite's simple pleasures included knitting, crocheting and assembling jigsaw puzzles. Because she was uncommonly lucky at games of chance, she also loved bingo, trips to the casino and to the horse races. In her final years she took increasing delight in the visits of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and every parting was accompanied with a declaration of her love. The family expresses its gratitude to the staffs of Victoria General Hospital and River Park Gardens for their kind treatment of Mom. We also wish to thank those who supported us in prayer during this difficult time. A celebration of Marguerite's life will take place at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 820 Cottonwood Road, on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Fred Olds officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marguerite's memory to either Winnipeg Harvest, 1085 Winnipeg Ave., Winnipeg, MB.,R3E 0S2 or The Ladybug Foundation, P.O. Box 21054, Winnipeg, MB R3R 3R2.
